Midtown Madness 2
A genuine classic free roam city racing game.
The sequel to the original Midtown Madness came out in September 2000, giving players the opportunity to race a number of vehicles around London or San Francisco. One of the major appeals of this and the original game was the ability to drive almost anywhere you wanted around the city, as well as play several racing/driving modes around both cities. Completing various modes allows the player to unlock different cars to race. Race cars such as a Mini Cooper (classic and new), Audi TT, Ford Mustang or an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, or climb into larger vehicles such as an American LaFrance Fire Truck, Double Decker Bus or a Humvee.
In Cruise mode, players can choose a vehicle and drive wherever they like around each city. Depending on how you drive, cars can show damage. The race modes Blitz, Checkpoint and Circuit pits you against other cars. As well as racing against the computer, players can compete against each other in Multiplayer mode. There are also challenges specific to each city; in London, players can take on the Cab Driving School, putting the player through a series of challenges in a London cab, and in San Francisco, Stunt Driver challenges players to complete Hollywood style stunt driving manoeuvres.
One of the main appeals of the game is its customisability. With each vehicle, players can select from a variety of paint jobs, change the weather, time of day, volume of traffic, number of pedestrians and how many Police cars are around the city (Police cars will chase and ram into you if you drive carelessly). Fans of the game have also produced a number of custom mods for the game, some of which are still available to download and patch into the game.
